Lockhart River Arts Indigenous Corporation receives current funding from the Australian Government through the Department of Communications and the Arts under the Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) program.

The Corporation also receives current funding from the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland's Backing Indigenous Arts initiative (BIA) program and the Regional Arts Development Fund (IRADF).

Business Hours: April 2022 to December 2022: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 9am to 1pm. Sunday by appointment through prior contact. Free entry.

Paytham Malkari Dance Festival

Congratulations to Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council for hosting the Paytham Malkari Dance Festival at the cultural presinct at Quintel Beach.

The festival was officially open by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Thursday 23 November 2023. Present at the opening was Queensland Minister for Transport Mark Bailey, Director General Warwick Agnew from the Department of Resources, Mayor Wayne Butcher, Council CEO David Clark, Kawadjii Wimpa Dance group, traditional land owners, community memebers and tourists.

July 2020 - Cairns Indigenous Art Fair has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Alterenative arrangements are being planned by the managment of Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and announcements will be published once available.

June 2020 - Fourth annual Lockhart River Gala Auction at Brisbane Club cancelled due to Covid-19. A new date will be announced post Covid-19 pandemic for the exclusive Lockhart River arts auction fundraising for Puuya Foundation Lockhart River.

Group participation at World Expo Dubai 2020 - Confirmed however finer details to be annouced in the near future and is also subject to Covid-19 Pandemic. 2 weeks participation by the Arts Centre's team of 8 artists and basket weavers at the Australian Pavillion Arts Program.

Cultural Retention

Community Development & Cultural Retention

Lockhart River Arts Centre has a cultural retention and community development program strategy that engages community members to participate in locally driven arts projects. The program components are subjective to funding and includes the corporation’s counter funding contributions.

Contemporary Dance Development

The Lockhart River Arts Centre has a firm and positive background in supporting the Kawadjii-Wimpa dance group through contemporary dance and collaborative programs with external stakeholders. In 2017, we have identified new program opportunities to develop our engagement in this critical community link activity.

Community Public Art Project

Lockhart River Arts Centre has successfully implemented key community based art projects in the last 5 years. Through Arts Queensland’s IRADF Funding program, The Art Centre has successfully undertaken the Electric Power Pole Art Project, Community Mural Projects and Secondary Student art class programs.
