Congratulations to Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire Council for hosting the Paytham Malkari Dance Festival at the cultural presinct at Quintel Beach.
The festival was officially open by Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk on Thursday 23 November 2023. Present at the opening was Queensland Minister for Transport Mark Bailey, Director General Warwick Agnew from the Department of Resources, Mayor Wayne Butcher, Council CEO David Clark, Kawadjii Wimpa Dance group, traditional land owners, community memebers and tourists.
Participating dance groups include Pormpuraaw traditional dancers, Yarrabah dancers and Naygayiw. The festival started on Thursday 23 November 2023 and ends on Saturday 25 November 2023. Daily programs starts from 4pm to 9pm. A big screen film showing te 1973 Lockhart River Dance Festival will be shown for all to view and appreciate the origins of this festival which will be 50th anniversary in 2024.
This will be an annual fixture and open to tourists, visitors into Lockhart River.
